I am oh so very excited I got my 1st BirchBox in today. Why? Well — it was one of the first beauty subscription services I have ever heard of. They have been around — I think September this year will be 2 years so they started it all! And I went onto the website to sign up back in February — the subscriptions were sold out. So I added myself to the waitlist. Well — I got my email the first week of April saying there were subscriptions available with a deadline date of 48 hours. Which I appreciated. It set more precedence and made it seem more important to sign up before I lost my chance.
Now the April box currently is green themed for Earth Day I believe — but my box is completely different I think because this is my 1st box. I am very happy for that though since I watched the April videos and only 2-3 items in other members’ boxes really excited me.
Before I tell you a little bit of the history behind BirchBox — this is my 1st blog on it so I plan on being very descriptive this go-around — I want to touch base on some new exciting news with the company. Birchbox now has a box for men that they are testing now for $20. Beta testing that now. And their May box will be Gossip Girl themed. I have no clue what is in store since I don’t watch the show. I do know the show is centered around some very posh characters so I am very excited to see what is in store for that.
What is Birchbox? It is a monthly beauty subscription service. One of the 1st ones ever created. You pay $10 a month or do a yearly subscription. And you receive a box with 4-5 deluxe beauty samples with a lifestyle item that can be centered around your wardrobe, your home or your health. Each box comes with beauty tips and tricks and promo codes. Shipping is free. If you like a product, you can always order the full size off their website. With every purchase — including your monthly birchboxes — you earn reward points. I believe it’s 1 point per dollar. When you get to 100 points, that is basically $10 that you can redeem. They encourage you to review the samples you receive — when you do that you earn points. And you earn 50 points per friend referral you successfully make. My referral link is:
Co-founders Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp met at Harvard Business School. They created Birchbox to help consumers cut through the clutter of the retail world to find products that really work for them. Based in New York City, Birchbox launched in September 2010. Birchbox has been featured by Time, Bloomberg Businessweek, InStyle and Marie Claire, among others — and it started the whole beauty monthly subscription service trend.
When I went onto the website back in February, I found out that the subscriptions were not available. So I signed onto their waiting list. I got the email that subscriptions were available the 1st week of April. The email had basically a deadline that urged me to sign up within 48 hours before they move on to other candidates on their waiting list. I signed up. Noticed the site said my 1st ship date would be April 15th. I got my email that my kit was on the way on April 14th. I was able to track its journey the whole way. It was predicted to be delivered on April 19th which was correct. It was delivered that day.
Now, let me get to the box. I was caught off guard by the size. The camera makes everything bigger. But it was still very cute in its pink box.
You pop the box open and I see the welcome card with a nice letter one side and description of your samples on the other side.
I open the pink tissue paper and this is what I see:
And I lift the large Befine box and see all the rest of my goodies:
This is what was so neatly wrapped in the silver tissue paper and dark grey ribbon:
And these are all my goodies:
Now, let me tell you about each goodie individually:
1. Befine Skincare Samoler — 2 .34 fl oz packets of Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 & 2 .34 fl oz packets of Exfoliating Cleanser sample values: $10 ($5 each)/ $6.39 ($2.16 each) — retail 1.7 oz/ 4 oz $25/$25. This exfoliator and moisturizer duo uses gentle ingredients like rice and brown sugar to keep skin supple and healthy.
2. Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy perfume 0.05 oz sample value $1.31 — retail 3.4 oz $89. The scent will bring out your inner girley girl. Wild berries flirt with mandarin and soft floral notes to create a fun and happy fragrance. I actually do like this fragrance. It is very sweet, fun and fruity smelling.
3. Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil (could not determine value — no size indication) — retail 5 oz $68. Stylists call this luxurious oil “Liquid Gold”. Keeps strands soft and silky with plenty of shine and volume.
4. Stila Smoky Eye Card single use — NO VALUE determinable — retail 0.9 oz value $45. Take the guesswork out of matching eye makeup with this min-palette of 3 shadows.
5. Lifestyle Extra: Hollywood fashion Secrets Fashion Tape Assortment Sample Pack — 2 sample packets of 2 strips each — total sample value: $1.79 each — retail18- 36 strips $4.99-$8.99. I got 2 strips each of the fashion tape for blouse gaps, special occasion tape for plunging necklines, accessory dots to hold accessories in place and temporary hem tape for adjusting pant lengths.
So the total value of my $10 Birchbox totals to $21.28 — and that is not including the eye shadow card and the expensive hair product sample — not bad for a $10 box!
What do I think of Birchbox so far? I like it a lot and I am so excited to be a new part of the Birchbox family. I am staying a member and cannot wait for my May Gossip Girl box. I think I may have to start watching the show on my Netflix account.
